Becky Rogers of Las Vegas and Jeff Meckstroth of Tampa FL won the World Mixed Pairs in 2002. Check out the following demonstration of card-reading skill by Rogers. She and Meckstroth were playing against Lisa and David Berkowitz of Old Tappan NJ.

David led the ♥J, ducked all around. He continued with the 10, on which Lisa discarded the encouraging ♣7. Rogers won the ♥A and played the ♠Q, ducked by David. He ducked again when Rogers played the ♠K. She got out of her hand with a heart, taken by David with the king, and he played a low club to Lisa’s ace.

Lisa returned the ♦J, which went around to dummy’s ace. Rogers followed with the ♠J to David’s ace, and he played a heart to dummy’s queen. This was the position as Rogers cashed the ♠10:

Rogers discarded her low diamond on the ♠10, and David threw the ♣8. Reading the position accurately, Rogers played a club to the king, dropping the queen, and took the ♣J for the all-important overtrick. Note that if David had discarded his low diamond instead of a club, Rogers could have thrown him in with the ♦K to lead into the ♣K J at the end for the same result. Plus 120 was good for 155 out of 180 match points.
