HORN LAKE, Miss., May 4, 2022 — Over the course of only one week, the American Contract Bridge League raised more than $108,000 through numerous fundraising games supporting humanitarian relief efforts for those affected by the war in Ukraine. The League, which is the governing body for duplicate bridge clubs and tournaments in North America, donated proceeds from an online tournament and special online club games for the United Nations World Food Program’s fund that was earmarked for Ukraine.
“The bridge table is a place of peace and camaraderie, and we wanted to channel that same sentiment to those suffering in Ukraine,” said Joe Jones, ACBL’s executive director. “These events were a fitting opportunity for ACBL members to not only share their support for humanitarian aid, but to also share their common passion for playing bridge. We thank all participating members and organizers whose generosity toward this effort far surpassed our expectations.”
Tens of thousands of competitive bridge players from across North America united in the cause and participated in online charity bridge games. ACBL specified date ranges during which all proceeds from entries to play in virtual bridge games supported the U.N. World Food Program. This included ACBL’s Hollywood Magic online regional tournament from March 24-27. Additionally, ACBL classified all virtual club games hosted from March 28-31 as charity games.
Over the course of the week, more than 11,000 virtual bridge tables of four players were active to support the cause, resulting in more than $108,000 raised.
In addition to this total, $25,000 will be donated to the UNICEF – Help Children in Ukraine Fund thanks to the ACBL Charity Foundation’s April fundraising games at virtual and in-person bridge clubs.
