Capitalizing on a strong performance in the first final session, the District 25 duo of Adam Grossack and Zachary Grossack won the Baldwin North American Pairs (Flight A) by one and a half boards. In second were Joel Wooldridge and Kent Mignocchi of District 24.
The winners, who finished the qualifying round in 22nd place (out of 28), scored 66.48% in the first final session to catapult them into the lead. The brothers, of Newton MA, added a 61.05% game in the second set to claim the win. Their four-session total was 453.06, while New Yorkers Wooldridge and Mignocchi finished with 433.18. Thirteen was top in the final.
The is the third NABC title the Grossacks have playing together, and fourth for Zachary.
In third place was Iftikhar Bahai and Mitch Dunitz of District 23 with 422.54.
The North American Pairs is a “grassroots” event that begins with qualifying games at the club/unit level, proceeds to the district level and finishes at the Spring NABC each year.
