The Chicago-area duo of Michael Kelley and Martina Kelley won the the Bean Red Ribbon Pairs with two solid performances in the final and a healthy carryover from the qualifying round. The Kelleys, who finished second in Friday’s opening round, scored 56.54% and 56.86% in the first and second final sessions, finished with a total of 574.93 matchpoints. Top in the final was 17.
In second with 569.89 were David Venetianer of Chadds Ford PA and Richard Franklin of New Canaan CT.
For the winners, this was the first time the pair had ever played in the event. Michael is a retired computer consultant, and Martina is a retired investigator for the U.S. Department of Labor. The Kelleys each
have enough masterpoints (about 2400 apiece) to make them still eligible to participate in this year’s contest. With the victory, however, they now have too many masterpoints to play in next year’s Rid Ribbon Pairs which has a limit of 2500 masterpoints.
