The Tampa-based duo of Jeff Edelstein and Matthew Weingarten narrowly captured the title in the Baldwin North American Pairs Flight A, winning the event by just 3 matchpoints (on a 13 top) over the second-place pair. Edelstein and Weingarten represented District 9.
In second was the District 10 pair of Jim Munday (Southaven MS) and Larry Sealy (Owens Cross Roads AL).
The winners, who qualified fourth after Wednesday’s opening round, scored 60% in Thursday’s first final session to take the lead. Their score in the second final set was a mere 53%, but it was enough to hang on against Munday and Sealy.
The was the first NABC title for the winners who have played as a partnership for two years.
“We were just happy to qualify,” said Weingarten. “We represented our district in Flight B just two years ago. We had no expectations about this event, but we were very consistent …”
“Except for the last session!” added Edelstein.
The winners’ four-session total was 411.47 matchpoints. Munday and Sealy finished with 408.47, while the California duo of Mark Itabashi and Ross Grabel were third with 401.57.
