Notice of 2021 ACBL Region-wide Elections for Board of Directors and District-wide Elections for Board of Governors Representatives

2021 Election Timetable
Each member of the ACBL in good standing and at least 18 years of age desiring to be a candidate for Regional Director or Board of Governors Representative must file a written declaration of candidacy with the ACBL Director of Elections prior to June 1 of the year of election. The declaration must be received by the Director of Elections no later than 5 p.m. Central Daylight Time on May 31 (declarations postmarked prior to June 1 but received after May 31 will not be considered as received on time). Delivery may be by mail, hand delivery or e-mail to ACBL Director of Elections, PO Box 289, Horn Lake, MS 38637-0289 orelections@acbl.org

The term for three-year elected positions begins January 1, 2022 and ends December 31, 2024, and the term for four-year elected positions begins January 1, 2022 and ends December 31, 2025.

What are these positions?
Regional Director: The Board of Directors is the governing body of the ACBL, by 2024 consisting of a Regional Director elected from each of 13 regions. During 2020, the 25 districts were reorganized into 13 regions (district boundaries remain unchanged). In 2021, one Regional Director from each of eight regions will be elected for a three-year or four-year term. The Board of Directors holds three regular meetings each year and makes policy decisions for the ACBL. Between meetings, committee activities and constant intercommunication among Board members and ACBL management keep the Board up to date on important matters.

Board of Governors Representatives (updated 4/13/21): Currently the Board of Governors numbers about 150 persons, comprised of five elected Representatives from each of the 25 districts, past presidents of the Board of Directors, and past chairs of the Board of Governors. However, the ACBL Bylaws were recently amended to provide that, by January 1, 2024, the Board of Governors will be comprised of three elected Representatives from each of the 25 districts plus the past presidents and past chairs. The positions of First Alternate District Director and Second Alternate District Director have been eliminated and no election will be held (the term of those occupants serving on January 1, 2021 have been extended for one year). Three Representatives from each of eight districts will be elected for a three-year term during the 2021 election cycle.

The Board of Governors meets for one session during the time of each North American Bridge Championship. This body represents the ACBL membership, reviewing actions taken by the Board of Directors and making recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Board of Directors at its next meeting will consider all such recommendations. Between meetings, BOG Representatives will work on task forces and ad hoc committees.
