Schubiner, Wynston win Wagar
Sondra Schubiner of Boca Raton FL and Linda Wynston of Toronto ON won the Wagar Women’s Pairs on Tuesday by more than a board. It’s their second national win, having won the same event in Atlanta in 2018.
Schubiner and Wynston qualified in second place with scores of 61.23% and 62.61%. A 53.08% first final dropped them to third, but their 60.92% last session lifted them ahead. They finished 33.5 matchpoints ahead on a 25 top. Their final score was 835.67.
“We were very steady,” Wynston said. “We pulled through. We were a little nervous after this morning. Everyone was pleasant.”
Living so far apart, they have benefitted in recent years from online play to practice their partnership, Schubiner said.
In second with 802.11 were Linda Epstein of Delray Beach FL and Bella Ionis-Sorren of Fort Lauderdale. They had been fifth after qualifying and moved up to second after a strong first final, but an average second final was only enough to hold that spot.
