    Charles Goren would have bid 1♦ bidding “up the line.” That’s fine. Many modern players prefer to bypass the diamond suit and show their major. These players must bid 1♥

    It doesn’t really matter. We would bid 2♠, our better major. Should partner continue with 3NT, we’ll bid 4♥ next, knowing that he has four of them

    Partner doesn’t have four spades or he would have bid 1♠. Don’t tell the opponents anything more about your hand. Bid 3NT.

    If partner will read a 4NT bid as “bid your best minor,” then that’s the bid. If you’re not sure of that, just pass. It is too dangerous to guess yourself.
